A community arts project is set to get underway at The Village at Wellard with the help of a $7,800 Community Arts Network WA Catalyst grant.
The grant was secured by a partnership between The Village at Wellard joint venture partners Peet Limited and the Department of Housing and Works, the Town of Kwinana and the Peter Carnley Anglican Community School.
The Village at Wellard Community Art project will provide an exciting opportunity for residents and the wider Kwinana community to work together to create series of community artworks.
Peet Limited Managing Director Brendan Gore said this was a great result for all the partners involved and particularly for the local community.
"The community now has the opportunity to be part of creating their own identity," said Mr Gore. "I look forward to seeing the creation of these artworks which will reflect the community's environmental and social values and principles."
"I encourage all the experienced and budding artists in the Kwinana area to share their ideas and get involved in this project," he said.
The artworks will contribute to the creation of dynamic, interactive areas of public open space within the estate with feature works also planned to run along the pathway in Linear Park.
The project is being coordinated by community consultants Creating Communities Australia and will also involve the Medina Aboriginal Cultural Community and Challenger TAFE students.
Town of Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said this was a great demonstration of what can be achieved through public / private partnerships.
"This project will deliver significant community, cultural and educational outcomes for the local community and create a cultural legacy for future generations," Ms Adams said.
A series of student and community workshops will be held, beginning in late July.

A warm welcome for new Wellard residents
More than 100 residents and purchasers took the opportunity to meet some of their new neighbours at the Wellard Residents Welcome event hosted by joint venture partners Peet Limited and the Department of Housing and Works on Sunday (13 April).
The event, which was held at Linear Park from 11am until 1pm provided the opportunity to mingle with other new residents, connect with local community groups and learn more about upcoming events and future developments planned for the estate.
Peet Limited Managing Director Brendan Gore said events like this provided a good platform for building a strong community.
“It’s a great start to moving into a new area,” said Mr Gore. “The opportunity to meet some of your neighbours makes it easier to feel connected to the community as soon as you move in.”
And the community spirit was buzzing on Sunday, with free entertainment setting the scene for a fun day out with face painting, games and activities as well as a scrumptious sausage sizzle.
All of the guests also received a reusable The Village at Wellard Welcome bag filled with valuable information to help them settle into the community.
Department of Housing and Works Deputy Director General Housing Services Kerry Fijac said the Government is committed to creating a new, vibrant and sustainable community at Wellard and providing opportunities for quality and affordable housing.
“With more than 650 homesites sold and around 150 households moved in to the estate, there’s a great sense of community developing at The Village at Wellard,” said Ms Fijac.
The 2700-lot community is the first walkable transit-oriented development to be built on the Southern Suburbs Railway. It also features more than 30 hectares of landscaped parks including 17 hectares dedicated as a Bush Forever site and a further 10 hectares reserved as conservation wetlands.
The Village at Wellard aims to encourage greater use of public transport, cycling and walking as well as promoting social cohesion, social diversity, conservation, public safety and community revitalisation.
There are currently a variety of options available for people interested in joining The Village at Wellard community.
There are still a few lots available on Beauchamp Loop and Halstead Turn in Wellard, all within a few minutes’ walk of the new Wellard Train Station, the bus station and future café strip, shops and medical facilities.
There are also some very affordable titled lots available in the Village Rise, Leda which has been made even more attractive with the Smart Buy incentive available on selected lots for a limited time only. This provides buyers with a $10,000 ‘finishing touches’ bonus as well as a generous front garden landscaping package, side and rear fencing, and retaining walls where necessary.
For more information visit The Village at Wellard Sales and Information Office on the corner of Runnymede Gate and Cliveden Avenue, Wellard which is open on Monday and Tuesday from 2pm to 5pm, Wednesday 3.30pm to 5pm as well as Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm or please visit www.thevillageatwellard.com.au.

Community celebration to mark pavilion opening at Wellard
The local community is set to celebrate the fruits of a partnership between local government, State Government and big business with the official opening of the new Wellard Community Pavilion at The Village at Wellard this weekend (16 March).
The pavilion – located on the sports oval on Wellard Road – is a new multipurpose community facility which will be available for use by local sporting and community groups. The Peter Carnley Anglican Community School will also use the facility for their sports program.
The Wellard Community Pavilion is the result of a partnership between Peet Limited, the Department of Housing and Works, Town of Kwinana, Department of Sport and Recreation and the Peter Carnley Anglican Community School.
Peet Limited Managing Director Brendan Gore said this was a milestone event for the estate and a great example of the benefits private/public partnerships can deliver to the community.
“The pavilion is a great facility, made possible by the commitment and funding from all of the project partners,” said Mr Gore.
To celebrate the official opening, the Town of Kwinana and The Village at Wellard joint venture partners, Peet Limited and the Department of Housing and Works, are hosting a free community celebration this Sunday.
Being held at the new pavilion between 10am and 12pm, there will be plenty of fun activities including displays, sports demonstrations, live music, face painting, a bouncy castle and a free sausage sizzle.
Town of Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams will officially cut the ribbon and declare the pavilion open at 10.30am.
“It will be a great opportunity for The Village at Wellard residents and local community to have a look at the pavilion and share in the celebration with their neighbours,” said Mr Gore. “I’m sure this will be the first of many great community events.”
The Leda Junior Football Club is the first group to start using the Wellard Community Pavilion and the Town of Kwinana are keen to hear from other community groups interested in using the facility.
The Village at Wellard will eventually be home to 2700 families, living on 320 hectares including 28 hectares of landscaped parks, 17 hectares dedicated to a Bush Forever site and 10 hectares of conservation wetlands.
There are currently a variety of options available for people interested in joining The Village at Wellard community including cottage, traditional and large family homesites in the first release south of the railway line within a few minutes’ walk of the new Wellard Train Station, as well as some very affordable titled lots available in the Village Rise, Leda.

Design guidelines show the way for Wellard Village Centre
The design guidelines for the proposed Village Centre at The Village at Wellard have been approved by the Town of Kwinana Council paving the way for development of the site which is set to become a vibrant hub for the local community.
The Wellard Village Centre, located adjacent to the new Wellard Train Station, is a return to traditional neighbourhood design with a defined town centre and traditional main street.
It is designed to incorporate a mix of retail, commercial, civic and residential components and over time will include a local supermarket, cafes, medical services, a newsagency, child care centre and a community centre.
Peet Limited Managing Director Brendan Gore said they were pleased to have reached this milestone.
“The Village Centre has been designed to cater for the shopping, entertainment, employment and social needs of the community,” said Mr Gore.
“Through careful planning, nearly all of The Village at Wellard homes will be within a short walk of the Village Centre providing all residents with easy access to the facilities they are looking for,” said Mr Gore.
The design guidelines will be used to guide the architectural form of the development of the Village Centre, ensuring a coordinated approach and a consistency of building quality.
The architectural character will be of a contemporary nature featuring composite external finishes, with primary wall materials such as painted render, stone work, or face brick complimented by minor elements of light weight cladding materials, accent colours and alternative materials.

Forward planning reaps railway benefits for The Village at Wellard
Careful master-planning and community design will see The Village at Wellard reap the maximum benefits from the new Perth to Mandurah railway.
The 2700-lot community is a joint venture between Peet Limited and the Department of Housing and Works and is the first walkable transit-oriented development to be built on the Southern Suburbs Railway.
Proving how important the estate is to the Perth to Mandurah line, Wellard Station was the new train’s only stop during its first journey from Mandurah to Perth on 23 December last year.
It was a day of celebration with more than 1,000 Wellard residents enjoying a free community event to commemorate the opening of the new train station as well as the arrival of the first train.
Peet Limited Managing Director Brendan Gore said the new train line is a key component of the estate’s transit-oriented design and will provide numerous benefits to residents and the surrounding community.
"Through careful planning, nearly all of The Village at Wellard homes will be within a 10-minute walk of the train station, making it an attractive transport alternative whether commuting for work or visiting family and friends,” Mr Gore said.
“The community has been designed to be environmentally sustainable on every level – from the protection of the surrounding environment to energy and water usage in the estate’s homes.”
Wellard resident James Manning said the train will make a huge difference for him commuting to the city each day for work.
“Catching the train to and from work each day is great, but it is so convenient to have the train station just a few minutes walk from home,” Mr Manning said. “
It is estimated that the new train line will carry 50,000 passengers a day to and from Mandurah and Perth. As well as Wellard, it will stop at the southern suburbs of Bull Creek, Murdoch, Cockburn, Kwinana, Rockingham, Warnbro and Mandurah.
There are currently a variety of homesite options available for people interested in joining The Village at Wellard community.
The most recent release included the first land south of the railway line in Wellard. The lots, located on Beauchamp Loop and Halstead Turn, range in size from 362sqm to 840sqm and are all within a few minutes walk of the new Wellard Train Station, the bus station and future café strip, shops and medical facilities.
There are also some very affordable titled lots available in the Village Rise, Leda which has been made even more attractive with the Smart Buy incentive available on selected lots for a limited time only.
